For instance, are they short poses or long poses, and what is the genral atmosphere? Any information is helpful. Thanks!

When: TBD
Cost: TBD

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,

We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

ARTISTS:
As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery (that features nudity/partial nudity)you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Here is the plot:
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. Who are in a very self destructive relationship, there perfect for each-other except they literally kill each-other by being together. A lot of psycho-sexual/self mutilation-masochism in this one. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis.

Keep in mind the budget of this movie will probably stay around 25-35, 000 dollars (already secured), so just warning I can't pay the highest rates

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin.
Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko.

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered.
She falls in love with Victor.

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

I need before I even start:
Prostethetics/Makeup- There are many parts of my movie that need gore, ghoulish makeup or creating body casts for dreamlike effect (like a scene where they fall onto the ground and break like porcelain blood-paint spraying out of them creating a heart) but most importantly I need someone who can help make someone look anorexic, eye sockets reccessed , hips sticking out, ribs sticking out, shoulder blades, etc. I can't start without this because it's one of the main characters.

Boom-I have someone lined up for operating boom/mixing sound, but I'm not sure he'll always be available. I need someone who has at least some experience in this to help. I have equipment but having (better?) equipment would be great.

Props- It would be great to have someone who can assist in creating edible (or non toxic) chemicals, substances, materials for the main characters to ingest. It would also free me up to think about other things.

Lighting/ Art Department/ Set Design/Decoration/Locations- I need someone who can do a lot without a lot who can work with unusual materials. Who isn't too expensive or I won't be able to afford you. Also may be able to transform other locations into desired location.Things needed for instance underground bomb shelter turned into run down sorta apartment. Abandoned buildings. Offices. Fashion Show. A sewer, where the characters live in and eat off of trash.

Original posting:

Set Decorators/Builders:
Though the majority of the movie will be in real locations. There will be a few sets built, and sets that will be decorated to fit the movie. I am looking for people who have experience building sets (theater experience would be great) on a low budget. Resourcefullness in materials is needed (Meaning you can do a lot with not a lot). Building flats, painting, decorating.

Prosthetics/ Make-Up: Though this is not a gore horror movie. There is quite a few instances of gore. People who have experience in mold making, prostethics, sculpture. etc. would be very helpfull. Also people good at making people looking sickly or malnourished through make-up needed. In addition Emma May, the severe anorexic will need added pieces to protrude her brows and jaw, her ribs, collar bones, hip bones, etc to make herself appear much thinner. Actually a lot of make up needs from simple to complex through out the movie.

Vfx-Compositors- Though this will not be a special effects epic, there will be things needed. Good flashy two animations/composting for some of the fake commercials/promos. Possible fire and underwater animation. Some manipulation of the video -color fluctuations, shrinking an enlarging, simple morph effects, color globules to represent visual aberrations in the characters eye-sight. Some 3-D needed especailly those who are good working with modeling human figures. But mostly more simple 2-D basic 3-D stuff. I may do this myself, but send me a link to your work, and I might hire you for the movie.

Props: I will be doing much of this myself, but may need help in re-creating chemicals, materials, such as drano, soap, dirt, carpet, many other instances through-out the script, to create realistic looking edible (or at least non toxic ) substitutes for the substances they swallow.

Mechanical/Puppetry- Not needed for a lot of the movie. But there is a few scenes with Emma Mays giant snake like tape worm that slithers around. Also a scene where skull bowls start vomiting (have to read script to explain) Could do myself, just seeing if anyone else might be interested.

Lighting Designer: Though I will likely take over this role myself, and a lot of the footage will be shoot in the streets style. There will be a few locations that will be staying in for a long while in the script, and would like good, stylized lighting for maximum creepy effectiveness.

Costume: I already have a few people on board for this, but as this movie ends in a big Valentines Day Fashion Show. I am looking for people who could be commisioned for clothing for that event (and other sequences in the movie as well). Also, previously made pieces could work.

Underwater Camera- Anyone who would like to rent me an underwater camera, or who has experience filming underwater, this is needed for a few sequences.

Boom Mic/ Sound Mixer- I already have someone onboard for this, but never hurts to have a second position, or a backup

Pyro/ Fire Safety/Explosion - This really isn't needed for a lot of the movie. But there is one scenes where a whole room catches on fire (with possible stuntman that catches on fire, I made do this in special effects). There is another scenes where a home-made bomb blows a crack into a wall and makes it crumble. I want these scenes to come off effective and safe.

Security- Not throughout the whole movie, but there will be scenes where I will be filming in potentially dangerous locations, and a climax that will need crowd control

Legal/ Locations- I will probably do this myself, but if anyone has experience in finding or knowing of great locations, or securing permits for locations. I might be interested in working with you.

Production Assistants/Co-Ordinaters (I am sure you know what this means)

Music- I have most of the music worked out. But a band fell out that I really felt I needed for some sequences. If your music is post -rocky, slow core or has that aphex twin meets godspeed you black emperor I may be interested. The kind of bands I'm looking for: Mew, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Spiritualized, 65 days of static, Sigur Ros. Also in some music Portis-Heady could work.

Thanks
-Jason

'Greetings Tribers, Have recently corresponded with somebody from another tribe on this subject. So had to do another 'search' and get increasingly specific; so possibly the subject may fit in better with this tribe. Specifically, am presently wrangling some sort of a deal to standardize and raise pay for the art models at universities and colleges. The reason for writing to you there on the West Coast being that the trolls abound on the East Coast. Bay Area Guild and Palo Alto Guild BOTH say that they want to get $30 per hr., minimum. Have heard even higher from verbatim sources, but don't go and compare this with the stinge bags of NYC or other cultural back-waters on the East Coast. They are entrenched with a scarcastic, anti-culture attitude and rarely pay over $16 an hr..

To do a FFW, have been doing the scheduling for art dpartments of numbers of 2ndarys for over 15-16 yrs.. Included Kingsboro College and Hunter College of the NYC system. Was also the treasurer of the only viable guild of NYC, the Society of Models for Art and Education.
Am still considering the whole condition to be a politicke of class and clone regulation on part of the powers that be, so have brought cases to the NYC Dpt of Labor about this. Basically from having been a former West Coast sort of cultural activist.

The down-drift of this being that some months ago, the grad assts at NYU were assisted at a labor effort. They were not going to work until they got a raise. Pay had been stale-mated at less than $20 an hr. for over 10-15 yrs.. They were organized and supported on the part of the local AFL-CIO that reps for the teachers and other staffers. They got $50 an hour, and of course, some RESPECT. So, as the negotiations were concluding, yours truly went to them with the plight of the art dept models. They were totally ABYSMALLY IGNORANT of the pay or conditions. Of course, you say to yourself, they weren't artists or other 'dept folk'.. But the difficulty has been and continues to be, that they have a genuine mis-giving about repping for the job 'cause the models are working either nude or mostly nude. They need to be really swept along with some strong opinions and that feeling of 'safety in numbers'. At present, they were acting embarrassed to even talk about the idea.

So, have been writng to models on the Internet, including the great British Guild, "R.A.M." and Iona Lynn among them, to get some support going. Possibly we could eventually write to the union with testimony and support their efforts. They do need to be 'encouraged', as obviously, they are not on the right level to even relate to the idea.

Your postings on this would be so appreciated, as am certain of the cause holding sway over the trolling and other detractors. Thank you again for corresponding and support. Deryk R. Demmer.'

ANYWAY, we're on for this Sunday at Merritt College, and the theme this time is "Flower Power". I have no idea what the models are going to make of that, but they did such a great job with the "Carnival" theme in February that I'm looking forward to seeing what they do! I myself have been up late painting very large and simplistic flowers on old bedsheets to hang behind the lovely nekkid people.

This is a great opportunity to draw from several different models, at once, for six hours, for less than you would ordinarily pay one model to work for three hours. We have music, there's food for sale, and the vibe is always really inspiring, with artists and models working together in a big space with a lot of light. Here's a link to the Web site, http://bayareamodelsguild.tripod.com, and here are the deets in brief form. We'd love to see you there!

I joined Tribe.net to connect with other bellydancers, but I think this tribe is a wonderful place for artists and models to network.

I myself am available for modeling in the central Florida area, but I'd love to chat with other artists and models as well! I'd also be happy to provide a list of open studios and classes in central Florida for anyone that's relocating to the area. I know many people here are living in the Bay Area (AMAZING artistic and cultural scene) but Orlando can hold its own ... you just have to look a little harder :-)

I also have a question to throw out : what is the normal pay rate per hour for a life model? I understand that in the Bay Area $20-$25 is the norm, but that's much higher than my usual rate of $15/hour, which is consistent almost everywhere I go. Then again, we don't have a model's guild here. Comments? I'd love to hear from people in other parts of the country.

This past January, I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl, Savannah. It has been an absolute miracle. I'm raising her on my own and am the happiest I've ever been in my entire life. I haven't been able to bring myself to separate from her and take her to daycare so I can go back to regular full-time work. I really don't know how other mothers can do it...

So, I'm looking for legitmate artists who need figure models and are willing to have my daughter present. It could mean that I may have to occassionally break a pose before the 20 minutes are up. I'm very willing to even the time out by taking shorter breaks, staying longer, coming earlier, or what ever it takes.

I thought that perhaps you or some of the LA area artists you know could use a professional figure model on an on-going basis. Even if only for occassional sessions, I'd love to hear from you.

The project is a music video for the band Lythion to their track "Cocky Prick." The story is of an ego driven man who starts to feel guilt and regret in the form of nightmare and fantasy as he lives out his self-centered existence. The drawings should be very sketchy and will be done on either wax paper or thin butcher paper. The only colors will be black and red. No animation experience is necessary. If someone can provide the drawings we can add the motion.

Any ideas for a suitable replacement for butcher paper?

Do you prefer drawing friends or strangers?

I was just speaking with someone today who said they far preferred drawing strangers rather than friends, I am so much the opposite that I mainly thought people would go to drawing groups instead of drawing a friend because "real world" people had some issue with it, whether it was a trust thing or shyness, I don't know.

When I was back in undergrad it was so easy to get friends to pose. You'd pose for friends, friends would pose for you, and then you had a lot of paintings of friends. After graduation, this became a MUCH different sort of thing to do. At first I thought it was just the societal change effecting college grads -- some adults (suspicious ones, I suppose) make it almost seem inappropriate or sleazy to ask someone if they'd be willing to pose -- the equivalent of persons offering a backrub but with intentions beyond that.

Fortunately, it did not turn out to be a progression of life...well, maybe it was...but now volunteers flow freely again, leading me to blame it on the yuppified group I was hanging with. Phew! Because I'd far rather draw friends than strangers.

The ladies I normally work with are all busy, so I have been asked to find someone new to work with. You should be comfortable with 2-20 minute nude poses in a standard drawing class format, with the poses being chosen by both of us, as we will be holding them together and balance, endurance, etc. will be shared efforts.

The amusements never cease, From a NYT article:

"Only a few years ago, the idea of artists gathering to paint from a model would have seemed impossibly old-fashioned and hokey - and if the model was female and nude, sexist to boot. Yet for nearly three years now, a number of artists - not students putting charcoal to paper for the first time, but successful artists with established styles and audiences of their own - have flocked to Mr. Cotton's weekly invitation-only sessions.

"There's something kind of fun about doing something so geeky, so nerdy, so traditional," Ms. Essenhigh said. "To do something so anti-conceptual and anti-Modernism feels really good, as if it were going to lead to helping you express things."

Most say the sessions have influenced their work, although not necessarily in obvious ways."

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/17/arts/design/17kino.html

I'm always glad to see people who consider themselves visual artists acknowledging that nude figurative work isn't as evil as they had thought, and that maybe, since it goes back to the Willendorf Venus if not earlier, that representing nude figures is at least acceptable, even if it is "hokey". Talk about progressiveness among artists- how wonderfully open minded of them.

The nature of the article and the kind of artists it represents I find absolutely offensive. Such incredible condescension towards generations of previous artists who made the figure central to their work. Because we all know that Michelangelo was sorely misguided, if only he would have realized how "nerdy" all those figures he carved looked, and don't get me started on that "hokey" Sistine Chapel of his...

I would think that it doesn't hurt to familiarize oneself with the traditional techniques of your given medium even if you never plan on using them. There should be a natural curiosity for such things. I think that its important to respect the work and techniques of others, even if you don't use those techniques or themes yourself. For example, I'm not much for animal portraiture, but I wouldn't have tried to talk Rosa Bonheur out of painting horses just because I believed her subject matter to be "dorky".

How To Draw People - How To Use Gesture When Drawing People

By Adam Reeder

When you are learning how to draw the human figure, it helps bring your drawing to life when you use gesture correctly. People's gestures are very dynamic and showing their gestures are key when draw the human figure.

Imagine for a moment that the body is 3 blocks; one block for the skull; one block for the rib cage and one block for the hips. These blocks can be positioned any way you want and then once the gesture is established, the arms and legs have very few options left for them to be placed in... In other words, once you find your gesture, your drawing is almost done. In a drawing with good gesture, you should be able to draw a line down the center of your figure.

That line should twist with the angle of the shoulders, hips and skull, so that the line has an "S" shaped curve to it. Once the 3 blocks are positioned so that the "S" is established, the next step is to be concerned with the direction the 3 blocks are facing. The 3 blocks should not be facing the same direction. Try drawing 3 blocks all facing the same direction and see how flat the drawing looks.

Now draw the head and hips facing the same way and the rib cage facing a different direction. Notice how dynamic and round the gesture feels once you have drawn it with those angles.

A really good example of this principle is Michelangelo’s "David". There are no two points on this figure that are parallel, for example, shoulders, hips, hands, feet, etc. The head, chest and hips are facing slightly different directions in this sculpture.

Creating a good "S" curve is the first step in any drawing or sculpture. All of your anatomy will be subservient to the gesture. For example, if your gesture indicates one hip lower than another, then one leg is going to be straight and one has to be bent.

The bottom line with gesture is, if you start a drawing with the “S” shaped curve, you have a good base to start a figure from.

In my downloadable book, available on my website: http://www.learn-drawing-sculpting.com, there is a 10-step pictorial tutorial on how "David" is layed out and drawn, including anatomy and more in-depth examples of how this technique is used.

Adam Reeder is a professional artist and has been an artist for the last 15 years. He is the author of "Learn To Draw Like A Pro", a downloadable book available on his website http://www.learn-drawing-sculpting.com.

Apparently she skipped breakfast, and had a long day with a long pose under the bright, hot lights. Then "the lights went out."
Models, have you ever been injured on the job? And artists? Please share! I promise I won't laugh at you, only with you.

Each local group is run by a local volunteer moderator (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by clicking on the region on the right. It will generate an automatic e-mail which, when sent, will sign you up for your local group and send you a response with instructions on how it works. Or, go directly to the Web site for your local group by clicking on your community's link on the left. Can't find a group near you? You might want to consider starting one (click on "Start a Group" for instructions). Have fun!
The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills. The Network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure!

Also, I'm curious about what kind of paper people use - what's important about the paper. I've mostly used paper 14"x17" recycled "sketch" paper, 60-65 lb weight. Which seemed to stand up better to water-brushing colors than the 70 lb "drawing" paper that I'm using right now.
Typically drawing with plain number 2 pencil, or watercolor pencils...

let us share our thoughts on a private e-workshop

I'm in for it , are you too buddies?
do you know if we can set up a private tribe in tribe.net?

we could do that easaly on a free photblog like http://www.fotopages.com
and all of us have the id and password to upload photos.
I did a similar colectiv blog there named thedarkroom on
http://thedarkroom.fotopages.com
one of us comes with a thematic and we all post photos in that thema.
these blogs can be set to private or public and no special software is required to upload pics ( just as in tribe)
not only the original poses could be there but also the resulting works

this is not to be compared with actual live drawing . nothing can replace that.
